Siampilot Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Tanai: What kind of tests do the professors use?
Mr. Colin: The professors use many kinds of tests, but more important than the tests is what you show the professor. The professors watch you more than they listen to you. So, for example, if the professors see pressure or frustration on your face when you do the tests, it will have a negative effect on you. Focus on what you show the professors, not on what you tell him. That is the most important point.
Sittidej: How can I apply for your course? When is the best time to start your course?
Mr. Colin: So many people ask these questions! Before you telephone or email Siampilot, please read the PILOT COURSE page on this website. Most people study between 3 and 6 months with Siampilot. However, it is not good because we have a lot to study and not enough time. It means we have to study hard, fast, and under a lot of pressure. We can finish the course, but if you want to relax and study with less pressure, then between 1 and 2 years before your tests is a good time to start.

Hari: I live in Papua New Guinea. I've always wanted to be a pilot, but I come from a poor family. Can you direct me on the right path to pursuing my dream?
Mr. Colin: I understand your problem. The answer is to find a scholarship from an airline in Papua New Guinea. If an airline is advertising for student pilots and you can apply, contact Siampilot again. We will advise you on each step. In the meantime, you need to show them you are serious to be a pilot. Learn everything you can about aircraft (the Siampilot website is a good start) and try to get some flying experience.

Jason: I am thinking of doing an instructor rating. Do you think it would be better to do my instructor rating in Thailand or abroad? How much would an instructor rating cost in Thailand? In what type of aircraft? What are the prospects for flying instructors in Thailand?
Christian: I am from Montreal, Canada. I'm a flight instructor with 930 flying hours. I would like to know if it is possible for someone like me to come to Thailand and teach?
Mr. Colin: Thailand does not have enough flight instructors, so the prospects for flight instructors with experience are very good. Thai people have a lot more respect for foreign instructors. For more information, you need to contact the Civil Aviation Training Centre in Bangkok or Hua Hin. There is a link to their website on our main Home Page.
Big Cheese: My mathematics and physics aren't very good because I graduated with a Law degree. My English isn't very good too. Can you teach me English and all of the pilot tests? Please advise me on what course I should take with you.
Mr. Colin: No problem! Every test and every interview is in English, so it is very very important you practise your English. Siampilot is the only school to teach about all of the tests and interviews in English. It is the best way to practise your English, and prepare for the tests and interviews. We will practise your mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, science, and aviation skills at the same time. Don't worry! We understand Thai and we speak English very very slowly!
Natthasit: If I pay to study at the flying school (CATC or BAC) and I get my CPL, will I have a better chance of passing?
Mr. Colin: A very popular question! The answer is yes, but it is risky! It is VERY expensive to pay to study yourself and does NOT guarantee you can get a job. However, every airline in Thailand is looking for ways to get & train pilots cheaply, so qualified pilots have a better chance of passing. The other main point you need to consider is that it is not enough to have only your CPL. Airlines need experience. We recommend you continue to fly and that you have at least 300 flying hours before you apply to the airlines. This will help you a lot. If you have friends that can study with you, it is possible you can get a discount from the flying schools. The age limit for TG qualified pilot is 42, so you have time to save your money and learn to fly. Siampilot has many many qualified pilots who come to study for many different airlines that advertise at different times of the year.

Captain Nitin: I am Indian and fly the Boeing 737. I am looking to get employed in TG. I have a current Indian DGCA CPL. Can you advise me?
Mr. Colin: TG do NOT accept foreign pilots. However, because you fly the 737, you may have a chance of applying to Thai Air Asia or even Nok Air. The first step for you is to convert your licence to Thai CPL. The Department of Aviation on Sathorn Road can advise you on this. If you need help about the tests to convert your licence, you have contacted the right people. We can help you to practise all of the conversion tests beforehand. If you prepare well, the conversion tests are not a problem. If you don't prepare and you fail, you must wait six months to tests again.
Jab: I have an interview for the Etihad Cadet Pilot Program. I don't know how I can prepare myself. I know nothing about aviation until now and I have only one month. I don't live in Thailand. Can you help me?
Mr. Colin: Hmmm, your chances of passing are not good. Preparation is the key to success. We now have a CD we can send to you. It contains group written tests, aptitude tests, computer tests, coordination tests, and a lot of other information for you to study and practise. We think it is very useful, but really the most important thing is the psychological interview. You need to focus on this because it is the step that most people fail. If you have time to come to Thailand, Siampilot can help you a lot with this step. If you are interested in the CD, please contact us.
Airman: Now I am only 15 years old. When is a good time to start your course?
Mr. Colin: Now! It is never too early to start this course. Serm: How can the tests show that someone can be a good pilot? Is it possible that someone did the tests badly, but they can still be a good pilot?
Mr. Colin: Like most things, good pilots become good through experience. The more experience you have, the better your skill. However, it is very difficult to get ‘real’ experience of emergencies, severe weather, hijacks, and other situations that happen only very very rarely. For this reason, many many tests are grouped together to find an average result. This will give a good prediction of how someone will or should react in an emergency or unpredictable situations.
Somsak: What are the professors looking for?
Mr. Colin: With good instructors and modern equipment, most pilot students have the ability to learn to fly. However, everyone has weak points. One of the most serious is man himself. Usually we can process lots of complex information, but when the situation becomes very stressful, hearing, vision, and performance can be seriously effected. So what the professors are looking for are your ‘breaking points’. When is the pressure too much for you? What happens to your decision making? What happens to you when you must do many things at the same time? There are many questions like that. The professors will test you about them all!

Prameth: I will be 30 years old this year. Can I still apply for Pilot Trainee?
Mr. Colin: Click Thai Airways Pilot, then click TG Schedule, Tests, Selection, & Training. You will find all of the information you need in the TG Pilot Application Procedures & Requirements section.
Suthichai: I want to apply for Bangkok Airways pilot. When should I start your course?
Mr. Colin: Now! Pilot is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. Start now! It will give us more time to help you.
VP: Is it possible to fail the Pilot Selection Program first time, but pass the second time?
Mr. Colin: That is a very difficult question. If you fail one time, it is very difficult to pass the second time, but not impossible! (We have students who passed the second time!) First, you must ask yourself why you didn’t pass the first time. Do you understand what you did wrong? What did the professor focus on? What subject did the professor ask about again and again? If you think you did nothing wrong, then it is possible your mistake was about your body language. Ask your friend to interview you. Ask him to tell you honestly what he thinks about your body language (confident, sincere, in control, positive, serious, friendly, …). If he thinks your body language is negative, you need to exactly understand what your problem is. After that, you need a long time (1-2 years) to focus on your problem and to try to improve it. Do not test again until you are sure you have improved your negative points. However, if you cannot improve them, do not test again. The result will be the same.
Chakrit: My Bachelor's Degree is Business Administration. Is it true that Thai Airways prefer graduates with computer or engineering degrees?
Mr. Colin: Good question! A computer or engineering degree can help to show you are serious to be a pilot, but many other degrees are useful for pilot too. Focus on what you know and think about how this can help you to be a pilot.
Samarth: I decided a short time ago to apply for pilot. Do you have any short courses we can study?
Mr. Colin: If we study quickly, we can finish the most important things, but we cannot finish. Pilot is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. If you prepare not well, your chance to pass is not good. Another choice is to cancel your application this year, come and study well, and test again next year. We can help you sure, but it is your choice.
David: I live in Canada. I want to apply for pilot with Canadian Air. Do you have any information about the aptitude tests that you can send to me?
Mr. Colin: Every airline around the world uses the same kinds of tests, so if someone studies with Siampilot for one airline, it can help for another airline. We now have a CD we can send to you. It contains group written tests, aptitude tests, computer tests, coordination tests, and a lot of other information for you to study and practise. Tawatchai: Your psychology puzzles are very interesting, but I'm not clear about the objective.
Mr. Colin: The objective of the Psychology Puzzles is to train you to think another way, not only the direct way. If you close your mind, you will think the answers for the Psychology Puzzles are just crazy, but if you try to open your mind, you will start to understand that many crazy indirect ideas can actually be very good answers. Practise!!! The basic technique is to choose the opposite answer, but you must have reason!!!
For example: Do you think you can be a good pilot?
No sir! I think every good pilot must think he is a bad pilot. If he thinks he is a bad pilot, he will want to improve, he will want to read more, he will want to practise more, and he will want to get more experience. I think that's a good way for safe pilots.
Vuttichai: How can I prepare myself well?
Mr. Colin: The tests and interviews are very different from the tests you had at university. The tests are designed to check you can take responsibility for the safety of everyone on board the aircraft. That is a very serious matter. How to prepare? Check this web site!
Dr. Montri: How can I help my 14 year-old son prepare for a career as a pilot? I advised him to study an engineering degree & practise his English. Before joining your course, what else can I do to help him?
Mr. Colin: You are doing everything you can to help him already. The most important thing is that he must want to be a pilot himself. If family pressure children into doing something, usually they do it not to the best of their ability. He must be motivated to be a pilot, otherwise he will fail the tests. Get him interested in flying; take him to the airport, organise an observation flight at one of the flying schools, learn more about flying, ... The Siampilot website is a good starting place.
Akira: I used to fly the Boeing 747 and 767 with ANA. I have 5,300 flying hours. I am Japanese, but my wife is Thai and I am now a Thai resident. I am looking for an opportunity to be an airline pilot in Thailand. Do you think I can meet the qualifications?
Joshua: I hold an instructor's certificate for Multi-Engine and Instrument here in Salt Lake City, U.S.A. I'm looking to apply to TG and Bangkok Airways as a qualified pilot.
Mr. Colin: Experienced pilots are very difficult to find. With your experience and flying hours, we think you have a very good chance of finding work with an airline in Thailand. Don't wait for airlines to advertise for pilots, submit your application to every airline now. Ask them if they ever require pilots, please contact me. You have nothing to lose. If you want to apply to Thai Airways International, you may not have much luck, but you can try contacting the head captain at www.thaiairways.com. He can give you more information. You may have more luck with the smaller airlines, like Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Orient Thai, PB Air, or Air Asia.

Suvit: I used to test before, but I failed with the professors. Is it possible to study only the psychology interview course with you?
Mr. Colin: The tests and interviews you remember, and the tests and interviews now are 70% not the same. It is not enough you study only for the interviews with the professors because the results of every step are important too. For example, if you pass the Group written Test, but not well, it will affect the decision of the Pilot Selection Committee after you interview with the professors. If you want to study, OK, we can help you, but your chance to pass is not good. A good pilot is a good planner. It is better you plan well, and find enough time to come and study with Siampilot.
Kitti: I saw your pilot statistics on your web site. If I study your course, I will have a good chance to pass, right?
Mr. Colin: Don't be too confident! Siampilot students pass because they are serious to be pilots and they work hard. Siampilot can help you sure, but at the end of the day, it is up to you.
Plum: I already read the book, 'I'm a pilot'. I just wanted to ask you, are you the writer, Flamingo? I liked the book and I learnt about your website from there.
Mr. Colin: My student is the author of this book!
Jo: I want to be a pilot, but I am over weight. Should I decrease my weight before I study with you?
Mr. Colin: All information about heights and weights is on my website. Please click Thai Airways Pilot, then click TG Schedule, Tests, Selection, & Training. You will find all of the information you need in the TG Pilot Application Procedures & Requirements section. The best time to start this course is NOW!
Golf: I'm currently working in Chacheonsao. It's quite far from your study room. What can I do? Please advise.
Mr. Colin: This course is completely flexible. You can study ANY day ANY time from 6 AM to midnight. We have classes every day. If you tell us what days and times you are free to study, we can check our schedule for you. If it is necessary, we can also change the day or time of every class to suit your university or work schedule. If you have only a limited time to study, we can increase the length of each class or give you TWO classes in one day. Don't worry! We will give you a break between the classes! If you are serious to be a pilot, Siampilot will do our best to help you to get your dream.

Prakitsart: I'm currently working as a Thai Airways steward. I want to be a TG pilot. How many hours do I need to study to finish all of your course? How much will it cost?
Mr. Colin: A very popular question! As we mentioned, the total hours of this course are NOT fixed. It is up to the person. Some people have good skills and study fast. Some people have poor skills and study more slowly. It is up to you! If you click Pilot Course on our website, you can find all information about the cost of this course. If you want to study in a group to reduce the cost, please tell us and we will find a group for you to study with.
Airman: Are there any websites that can help me to prepare myself?
Mr. Colin: Yes! Siampilot.com! Our website is very very big! Please use your time to check this website completely. There are also some links to other websites on the main Home Page and other pages of this website. These might be useful to you.
Top: I'm currently doing a master's degree at the State University of New York in the USA. I expect to graduate soon. What can I do right now to prepare myself?
Mr. Colin: First check this website. It is very very big! We used a lot of time to create information on this website that can help you to prepare yourself, especially about aircraft and aviation knowledge. Please use your time to check this website completely. There are also some links to other websites on the main Home Page and other pages of this website. These might be useful to you.
Catherine (1): I just got my CPL and I'm currently studying for my ATPL. I just wanted to know what are the opportunities for a foreign female pilot working in Thailand?
Mr. Colin: Thai Airways stopped recruiting foreign pilots a long time ago and have never recruited even Thai female pilots. We heard Thailand may open its doors to foreign pilots soon to fill the demand for pilots, especially with low-budget airlines. Bangkok Airways and Air Asia both accept female pilots, so your best chance is to apply to them. However, our advice to you is to apply to all airlines in Thailand. Experienced pilots are very difficult to find. Don't wait for airlines to advertise for pilots, submit your application to every airline now. Ask them if they ever require pilots, please contact me. Orawan: I'm a Thai female living in Dubai. I'm currently working with Emirate Airlines' cabin crew and in my free time, I'm doing my CPL. I would like to apply for a pilot's position in Thailand. I go back to Bangkok once a month. I would like to know what type of course I should take with you to prepare. Are one or two classes per month enough for me to prepare myself? How many hours do I need to study to finish all of your course?
Mr. Colin: Siampilot's pilot course will prepare you for every airline around the world. As we mentioned, the total hours of this course are NOT fixed. It is up to the person. Some people have good skills and study fast. Some people have poor skills and study more slowly. It is up to you! If you click Pilot Course, Bangkok Airways Pilot, or Air Asia Pilot on our website, you will find all the information about the details and cost of this course. If you want to study in a group to reduce the cost, please tell us and we will find a group for you to study with. One or two classes per month is NOT enough to prepare you well. If you have only a limited time to study, we can increase the length of each class or give you TWO classes in one day. Don't worry! We will give you a break between the classes!
Catherine (2): Do you have the telephone numbers for any new start-up airlines in Thailand as I have been unable to find their websites?
Mr. Colin: There are links to the websites of new start-up airlines on our main Home Page. You will also find other useful websites on our main Home Page and on other pages of this website.

You have nothing to lose.

Hassan: I'm Malaysian. I just wanted to know what are the opportunities for a foreign pilot working in Thailand?
Mr. Colin: Thai Airways stopped recruiting foreign pilots a long time ago. We heard Thailand may open its doors to foreign pilots soon to fill the demand for pilots, especially with low-budget airlines. Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Orient Thai, PB Air, and Air Asia would be your best chance. However, our advice to you is to apply to all airlines in Thailand. Don't wait for airlines to advertise for pilots, submit your application to every airline now. Ask them if they ever require pilots, please contact me. You have nothing to lose.
Not Confident: I worry about my ability to study your Pilot Course because I never studied physics before.
Mr. Colin: Don't worry! We will study physics too. If you don't understand, we will do it again and again until you do understand! If we think some of your skills are not good enough, we will practise again and again to improve your weaknesses. At Siampilot, quality and people come first.
Catherine (3): I know I need to convert my pilot licence to work in Thailand, but what exactly does the Thai CPL conversion involve?
Mr. Colin: To convert your licence from the JAA or FAA pilot licence to the Thai CPL, you will have an aviation knowledge test, a medical test, a check ride, and the Aviation Hospital Group Written Test and Individual Test. The whole process takes about 6 months. Siampilot can help you to prepare for everything here.
Jason (1): How many hours do I need to clock up before applying to an airline? Should I do a type rating on a 737 or will the airlines provide type rating training for pilots with basic CPL's? How can I clock up more experience?
Mr. Colin: If you want to have a real chance of passing, it is not enough to have only your CPL. Airlines need experience. We recommend you continue to fly and that you have at least 300 flying hours before you apply. This will help you a lot. Siampilot has many many qualified pilots who come to study. Those that pass usually have a lot of flying hours. If you have only the minimum flying hours to get your CPL, you can still pass, but you need to show you have experience in other areas (work, training, ...). This will help balance your lack of flying experience. The airlines will provide type rating training for pilots with basic CPL's, so it is unnecessary to pay to do a type rating yourself. The best way to try to build up your experience and flying hours is by flying at a local flying club (Thailand has many), or by becoming a safety pilot, and earning flying hours and experience for free!

Narawat: I want to know about your schedule at the weekends. I know you are very busy. Do you have time for me to study?
Mr. Colin: We have classes from 6 AM to midnight every day. If you tell us what days and times you are free to study, we can check our schedule for you. If it is necessary, we can also change the day or time of every class to suit your university or work schedule.
Rami: I have been working as a captain with Delta Connection for the past 16 years now. I'm interested in applying to another airline. I have a Group Written Test in Cairo, Egypt about general aviation knowledge and then an interview with the Flight Operations Department. I don't remember much about basic general aviation knowledge or about what kinds of questions they might ask in the Group Written Test. Can you help?
Mr. Colin: Most airlines around the world uses the same kinds of tests, so we recommend you first click the Thai Airways Pilot section on this website, then click TG Schedule, Tests, Selection, & Training. In the Group Written Test section for qualified pilot, you will find some useful information. It would also help you to read that entire page. It has a lot of extremely useful information.
Kate: I am a qualified pilot. Can you please tell me which airlines in Thailand accept female pilots?
Mr. Colin: Bangkok Airways and Air Asia both accept female pilots. However, our advice to you is to apply to all airlines in Thailand. As we mentioned, experienced pilots are very difficult to find. Pattanapong: Now I am studying for my Commercial Pilot Licence at the CATC in Hua Hin. I will graduate in about one year. When is a suitable time to start your course, sir?
Mr. Colin: Good question. Most people study about 6 months with Siampilot. However, it is not good because we have a lot to study and not enough time. It means we have to study hard, fast, and under a lot of pressure. We can finish the course, but if you want to relax and study with less pressure, then between 1 and 2 years before your tests is a good time to start.
Mr. Colin: We have classes from 6 AM to midnight every day. If you tell us what days and times you are free to study, we can check our schedule for you. If it is necessary, we can also change the day or time of every class to suit your university or work schedule.

Jab: I have an interview for student pilot with Saudi Arabian Airlines. Can you help?
Mr. Colin: As we mentioned, most airlines around the world uses the same kinds of tests, so if someone studies with Siampilot for one airline, it can help for another airline.
Greg: I am a captain with KLM. I just wanted to ask you if Thai Airways still recruit foreign pilots.
Mr. Colin: Unfortunately, no. Thai Airways stopped recruiting foreign pilots a long time ago. We suggest you apply to some of the other airlines in Thailand. Experienced pilots are difficult to find. Submit your application. You have nothing to lose. If you still want to try to apply to Thai Airways International, we suggest you contact the head captain at www.thaiairways.com. He can give you more information.
Montri: I failed the TG Aptitude Test 2 years ago. If I wait another year, my age will be over the limit. Is it possible to go and apply again this year?
Mr. Colin: Try is better than not try! If you explain to them that you really want to be a pilot, but next year, you will be over the age limit, then it is possible they will allow you to apply.
Phattanan: Do you know when Bangkok Airways plans to advertise for Student Pilot?
Mr. Colin: Usually Bangkok Airways advertises for Student Pilot every October, but now the big problem is when they advertise, not many people know about it! Keep checking the Bangkok Airways website!!!
Mathew: I am from India, but now I live in the U.K. I want to be a commercial pilot. How can I apply for this course?
Basit (1): Are you only an expert on airlines in Thailand or can you help me with other airlines in Asia?
Mr. Colin: Most airlines around the world uses the same kinds of tests, so if someone studies with Siampilot for one airline, it can help for another airline. Last year, we taught people over the Internet (we never met them). They are now pilots with Malaysian Airlines! First of all, if you want to apply to an airline, you usually need to be a citizen of that country. Check each airline's website. Some airlines will accept foreign qualified pilots, but usually not foreign student pilots. Again, check each airline's website; It is possible we are wrong!
